Book Idea Generator
Get book premises with a real conflict in them, written to your genre. Free, no account needed.
Most generated book ideas are settings with nobody in them: a city on the back of a whale, a school for time travellers. A setting is not a premise. A premise has somebody who wants something, and a reason they cannot simply have it.
Each idea below names a character, what they want and what is in the way, which is the minimum you need before an outline can be built out of it.
Common questions
- Can I copyright a book idea?
- No. Copyright protects the expression, not the idea, so nobody owns a premise and you are free to write any of these. What you write is yours.
- What makes a premise strong enough to write?
- You can state who wants what, and why they cannot have it, in one sentence. If the sentence needs an 'and then' to be interesting, the premise is doing less work than the plot.
